Ways to practice in an apartment building and not disturb your neighbors!!
#1
A few people have asked me if there is a way to silence the clarinet in order to practice lets say in a populated apartment building or late at night...

Some times I get the clarinet itch at 12'o clock at night and I REALLY NEED to play!!!MusicMusic

But that may create issues as furious knocking on the walls...dogs barking and life threats etc....

There are couple of ways to handle this one.

a) The easy way is to get a silencer - $30-$40
One popular one is : http://1stopwinds.com/bbclmubysa.html
The way it works is that you put an insert which is like a sponge in the mouthpiece and another one in the barrel. and that baffles the sound.

Really challenging to silence a clarinet as the sounds comes out of every hole...But this works...

b) Make your own recording studio room.
Unless you are claustrophobic you can get some wood, lots of foam, hammer and nails and make your own recording box... It is the best way if you have the time and a corner in your house to spare...Note that you will probably need a microphone and headphones otherwise the sounds of the clarinet in a room like that is....horrible...There is no reverberation from the walls so you really can't hear much. If you have ever played in such a room you know what I am talking about!

I found a very nice video on youtube on the subject:

There are plenty more online if you google around... Search for : DIY recording studio or DIY recording booth.

3) my least favorite option is the midi clarinet:

$300-$500..
Enough said...as I said... my least favorite option!!!
