OK,

Here is the hard way that I prefer since you will BUILD some intuition on the BPM's.

A) Listen to the song, preferably with earphones. Relax and follow the beat. Start nodding your head or tapping.
B) Notice the marking on the beginning of the sheet music. 3/4, 4/4 etc. Then you count 1...2...3 for 3/4 and 1...2...3...4 for 4/4 etc...
C) Look at the clock and let 15 sec's pass as you measure the beats. (each node or tap is a beat)
D) Stop at 15 secs and lets say you got 20 beats. Do 4 x 20 = 80 BPMs (4 is cause you have 4x 15 secs in 60 secs or 1 min.)

So now you know where to put your metronome BPM's.
I 'd suggest to start with slower BPM's than the actual song in the beginning. Don't try to play fast! try to play correct!

The easy way is to get one of these software:
ACID (Import an mp3 and it will calculate BPM for you)
ANY DJ software (and there are many free out there) will also calculate that.
ex. Traktor

Here is a free software to do that:

And don't forget to get a suggested metronome from here:
http://www.klarinogreek.com/content/en/B...sories.php

You can also put the measure of the piece in the metronome like 3/4 or 4/4 or 7/8 so that it hits the first beat correctly every time.

Hope this helped!
