THANKS THANKS Thanks! This recording is great. I am so used to listening to him using so much echo that you can't really tell what he is playing.
This is what I was looking for! Crystal Clear simple clarinet sound!! Great CD.

Do you know if the "itia" version that he plays is called the "palia itia"? I play about the same melodies that he does and I remember that I learned from a CD of Petroloukas: "elladika kelaidismata"
I will look it up and post it too. I think I will make a thread where we can post all versions of Itia! What do u think?

Tseligas - that is indeed the "palia itia" version that Aristopoulos is playing.

I have included various versions of Itia for everyone to listen to and it
would be very interesting for people to post their favourite version
here and to finally come up with a favourite. Comments are welcome.
I thought the final version by the student may help you in your notations.

Hello Tseligas - I have included a song "O Yero Tselingas"in my previous post.
It is one of my favourites. Are you familiar with this Tsamiko? Do you play it?
Would you like the notes for it?

I really like listening to old recordings of demotika played by the masters. Pre 1960's there
were a handfull of "greats" that toured all over Greece and became quite famous,
The old recordings reveal the true sound of the song without the benefit of modern electronics. This is
not to say a particular version is "better."
Compare Aristopoulos playing "Palia Itia" in the tradition of Karakostas' version with the original
1931 simple studio recording played by Karakostas himself.

Niaven, I agree. in my village in Greece I have Discs 45's that my grandfather had when he was an immigrant in Germany..
So I got many of the first recordings!!

The old sound was different indeed. That is an ice Thread to start..btw... how to reproduce the old sound..hmmm

Gerotseligas is deifinitely one of my favorites...!! You know I had couple of dance groups when I was up in Boston and we did a small sketch with gerotseligas..(I was the gerotseligas and I couldn't dance while the youth was dancing and eventually I made it..) I borrowed the idea from the dance of the sfougarades....

I do play that one. I will start another thread in favorite songs about it.!

ive got a friend old clarinet player from loukas ,tripoleos beore 1957 ,everybody would use (DO) clarina, do to the fact that the sound would carry farther , amplification in tripolis and in the villages was unheard of ,once the amplifiers and mikes came they discovered the b flat , now the (LA) clarinet is also popular , if you pay close attention to the old recordings he can hear the male singers straining to get there voice to the upper octaves (a lot of songs were done in the scale of re or do) . fast forward to now the singers are singing from la .and sol

I have read a book from Petroloukas (Can't find it now ..left it in Greece somewhere. if somebody has it let me know) and he was saying too that they preffered to play with the "κοντό" ..with the short clarinet...
They liked that sound much more!!

I have found a very early version of this classic Tsamiko which was produced
in 1930. A good narrative of the origins of the song and the history behind it.
A lot of demotika songs are based on actual historical events and became popular

Το τραγούδι όπως και η ταινία του 1926 του Αχιλλέα Μαδρά άπό όπου οι εικόνες αναφέρονται στην ιστορία της Μαρίας Πενταγιώτισσας. Γεννημένη το 1821 (κατά άλλους το 1830) κόρη δασκάλου το πραγματικό της όνομα παραμένει άγνωστο, το επίθετο που της έχει αποδoθεί οφείλεται στον τόπο καταγωγής της (Πενταγιοί Δωρίδας. Κατά το Νεώτερον Εγκυκλοπαιδικόν Λεξικόν Ηλίου 'η ερωτομανής διαγωγή της που έφθασε σε τέτοιο βαθμό οι πολυάριθμοι εραστές της να περιέλθουν σε μεταξύ τους διαμάχες και συγκρούσεις ακόμα και με τραυματισμούς από ζηλοτυπία'. Ερωτεύεται έναν νεαρό του χωριού τον Δημήτρη Τουρκάκη, για τον οποίο ο αδερφός της ασκεί πίεση ώστε να σταματήσει τις σχέσεις μαζί του. Ο Τουρκάκης σκοτώνει τον αδερφό της Μαρίας η οποία μαζί με τον δολοφόνο σύρεται στο Κακουργοδικείο Μεσολογγίου όπου καταφέρνει να αθωωθεί από καθαρή μεροληψία των ενόρκων "θελχθέντων από την ωραιότητά της". Δυο εκδοχές υφίστανται κατά τη παράδοση : Κατά τη πρώτη ο Τουρκάκης καταδικάζεται σε θάνατο και η ίδια παντρεύτηκε τον χήρο Κωνσταντίνο Αρμάο στο διπλανό χωριό Παλαιοκάτουνο (Κροκύλειο όπου μεγάλωσε τα τέσσερα παιδιά του που είχε από τον προηγούμενο γάμο και πέθανε το 1885. Κατά τη δεύτερη τόσο η ίδια όσο και ο Τουρκάκης καταδικάζονται σε 3 ετή φυλάκιση. Μετά την αποφυλάκισή της γίνεται καπετάνισσα των ληστών του λήσταρχου Νταβέλη και επιστρέφει στο χωριό για να εκδικηθεί όσους της φέρθηκαν άσχημα. Στη ταινία του Μαδρά η Μαρία φέρεται να είχε καταφύγει περί το τέλος της ζωής της σε μοναστήρι όπου και πέθανε. Το 1890 ο Κωστής Παλαμάς δημοσιεύει το πολύστιχο ποίημα ''Τα μάτια της ψυχής μου" στο οποίο ύμνησε τα χαρίσματά της.

και στο Χρυσό κριάρια
μικρή δασκαλοπούλα.
Και στης Μαρίας την ποδιά
